Haval Sheikh Ja'far Sheikh Mustafa، head of the Council for the Protection of The High Interests of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK)، welcomed a delegation of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) l headed by Manuj Matthew، UNAMI's director general of political affairs in Iraq.
In a meeting، the latest developments in the current political situation in the Kurdistan Region were discussed، and in this regard، the head of the visiting delegation stated that UNAMI intends to understand the views of the Head of the Council، regarding the latest developments related to the challenges facing the kurdistan parliamentary election process and the ways to solve these challenges.
In return، the head of the Council for the Protection of High Interests explained the PUK's view on this issue to the UNAMI delegation and stressed that the PUK has never been in favor of delaying the elections in the past، and now emphasizes the need to do the process at its own time، and we agree that the elections will no longer be postponed under any excuse، and the PUK has made full preparations in this regard. He said the delay in the elections would cause great damage to the democratic process and the region's reputation، and would cause further frustration and annoyance for the masses.
At the same time، he stressed the importance of holding elections in time and said that the process، in addition to being a constitutional and democratic entitlement، will fill the legal vacuum that exists and legitimize the institutions of the region، and will play a role in solving many of the problems facing the Kurdistan Region and its inhabitants، above all the challenges related to the lives and livelihoods of the people.
He called on UNAMI to play their part in technical and electoral monitoring issues and strengthen their efforts to make the process successful، and expressed the PUK's desire to continue the work of UNAMI in Iraq، which has always had a significant role in calming the difficult situation and finding suitable solutions for them.
